February 7 is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

Sunday, February 7, is National Black AIDS Awareness Day. AIDS continues to disproportionately impact African Americans both nationally and here in Minnesota. The Minnesota AIDS Project encourages anyone with questions about HIV to contact the AIDSLine at 612–373–AIDS (metro) or 800–248–AIDS (statewide) to speak with one of our community educators on these important issues.

To find out more, you can also visit the National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day website or view The Centers for Disease Control news release.

HIV Infections Up in Minnesota During 2009

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) today released information on the number of new HIV infections in Minnesota for 2009. The number of confirmed new cases rose to 368, a seventeen year high and thirteen percent overall increase, with a rapid increase in the number of infections in young gay or bisexual men. The data points to the critical need for renewed education efforts particularly in young adults. Read the full release from the Minnesota AIDS Project.

World AIDS Day 2009

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the Mall of America Best Buy for the Minnesota AIDS Project World AIDS Day event and kickoff of the 2010 Minnesota AIDS Walk. It was a great event with over 200 attendees that shared in the importance of World AIDS Day and renewed their commitment to educate others on the importance of HIV prevention.

Many attendees also registered to participate in the 2010 Minnesota AIDS Walk on the newly launched site to get a great start on their team-building and fundraising. The evening included appearances by all the models from the Minnesota AIDS Walk promotion campaign featuring a limited edition 2010 AIDS Walk t-shirt.

The Minnesota AIDS Project also revealed a new logo that will represent the agency in 2010 and beyond. The changing logo and new look represent the continuing evolution of the Minnesota AIDS Project to meet the needs of our community as the issues of HIV prevention and care continue to evolve as well. This logo features an updated look that points to change but includes a strong font and lettering style that conveys the strength and stability of the organization with well-established expertise in HIV prevention and care.
